A Weather Channel reporter stopped his broadcast when he noticed an American flag on the ground, and what he did next garnered applause across social media (video below).
Paul Goodloe was reporting on Hurricane Harvey near Houston when he pointed out the flag buried underneath a tree.
“I don’t know how strong the winds have to be to cut a palm tree in half, but that’s what happened to the top of this tree,” he says in the clip. “But next to it, we’ve got Old Glory and I just, I can’t let Old Glory just sit here like that. The school, yeah, it’s battered, so is the flag, but we’ve got to fold this up.”
Goodloe adds that he wants to make sure the flag isn’t “a casualty to Hurricane Harvey.” He proceeds to fold it properly with the help of a cameraman.
“Not the perfect fold, but definitely a rescue from Hurricane Harvey,” he says.
After the clip of his flag rescue went viral, Goodloe took to Facebook to acknowledge his good deed.
“Thanks everyone for your kind words of appreciation. I was only doing what I thought was the right thing to do. I knew how to fold the flag from grade school flag duty as well as being a Boy Scout! Plan to have the flag cleaned and returned to the school,” he wrote in a post.
Many viewers applauded Goodloe for doing what he did.
“Can’t imagine any American not doing as he did,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page. “I think it was so neat he knew how to properly fold the flag from his school days!!! Bravo!!! We so needed to see that respect is still alive and well in our society.”
“Thank you for rescuing that flag but also for properly folding it,” another wrote. “Too many people today would rather burn it than rescue it and this made my heart happy to see our flag respected in the midst of chaos.”
“Thank you for doing the right thing in this situation!” another wrote on Goodloe’s Facebook page. “It may be easy for you to do, but for some it wouldn’t ever cross their mind. You’re a role model for Americans across this great nation! You gained a family of fans with this video!”
“As a Veteran, and an American, I was so inspired by watching you rescue ‘Old Glory,’ and then respectfully folding and rendering honors to it,” wrote another commenter. “At a time when our Flag is being so disrespected across our Land, your actions give me hope for our Country. Thank you, Paul Goodloe.”
