A wealthy New Jersey man reportedly paid more than $10,000 to cover layaway items for people in his community purchasing Christmas gifts.
The generous secret Santa, who identified himself as Charlie K., said he woke up to shop for his own son’s gift and felt inspired to give back, KYW reports.
“I’m trying to bring some happiness to people, to the community that brought happiness to me and my family,” the man said. “I love this community and I am trying to provide back to it.”
The generous Cherry Hill resident paid for around 62 orders that totaled $10,780. He wanted to pay for all of the store’s layaway orders, but the cost was a bit too much.
Charlie continued his generosity by also contributing $2,000 to Toys For Tots.
“The Marines and Toys for Tots are one of the best organizations, and I don’t want to forget them,” he said.
Charlie told KYW this was the first time he’s done something like this, though he has a history of giving back to his community.
Some of Charlie’s recipients at Toys “R” Us spoke with KYW about the amazing gesture after leaving the store with their items.
“I want to say thank you very much and I appreciate it and thank god for you,” said Stephanie Dawson, who had $200 worth of gifts for her grandchildren paid for. Dawson heard about Charlie’s act of kindness and traveled to the store to see if her gifts were among the orders Charlie covered.
“They come over and tell me someone actually paid the layaway,” said Jessica Jey, who was pleasantly surprised to learn of Charlie’s act of kindness upon arriving to the store. “It’s definitely an early Christmas and I want to say thank you to the gentleman that came in and donated it’s like the best feeling thank you.”
Many readers applauded Charlie for giving back to his community in such a significant way.
“What an amazing man, God bless him for his goodness, and we have so many rich people in this world if they all did that, every child would have a Christmas,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
“We need more people like him,” another wrote. “[A]nyway how anyone can help in many ways any form that makes people happy esp the ones who really could use it.”
“Thank you sir for being a Santa for these people,” added another. “May God bless you and your family.”
“Thank you for your generosity and your shining example,” another commented. “Bless you.”
